I agree with Stephan Hoeller's gnosis explanation. Receiving gnosis was a transcendental personal experience after years of search.
I have experienced several "Aha" moments of understanding. I had an "Aha" moment to understand, why that the world had death, sociopathic design of life (e.g. wasps laying eggs in insects, where larvae feast off implanted victim) and suffering was due to the creation and actions of the demiurge. Another. "Aha" moment, was when I learned that I am a spirit with a consciousness not a just a soul. I gained other "Aha" moments through reading the gnostic texts.
You really can not gain gnosis through acquiring facts, it is an inner personal experience that changes you forever. Once you gained gnosis, you can not ever go back to what you believed before because you gained an inner truth and knowledge about self.
