How many people know about the Grid and how many of them are willing to leave? A few thousands? Ten thousands? The overlords won't bother with stopping such a small group when they still have billions of souls serving them. But let's suppose all of humanity wake up today and decide to go through the Grid. Would the overlords respect our freewill this time and let us go? Of course not. They already breached our freewill once so why wouldn't they do it again? They are already screwed and desperate and have nothing to lose. Therefore all the information Wes offers is basically useless on the global scale - our situation is not about convincing people to let the Orions intervene - they already have our valid consent given before the flood. Our situation is about getting rid of the overlords so they do not have the power to forcefully keep us here.
But how would that be done (getting rid of the Overlords), without jeopardizing the lives of billions of souls? If the Overlords would be seriously threatened (by Orions, for example) what would the Overlords do when they are cornered? They are not known for giving up, psychopathic as they are. What do psychopathic criminals (throughout history) often do when they are cornered? They take hostage and use them as shields, trying to shoot themselves out or die in the attempt. The shields are us and the consequence is soul termination. This is, from what I've learned, a very plausible last solution for the Overlords. It would end up with the Overlords shot to pieces together with us. What do kidnappers do if their needs are not met? They shoot the hostage, one by one. In the Overlords case, maybe thousands by thousands...
